Mamee-Double Decker H1 pre-tax profit flat

Mamee-Double Decker (M) Bhd's pre-tax profit for the first half year ended June 30, 2010 was almost flat, when compared with the corresponding period of 2009 due to marketing expenses for new products.

The food and beverage manufacturer's pre-tax profit stood at RM29.27 million against RM27.16 previously. The company's turnover jumped to RM235.5 million compared with RM194.49 in the first half of 2009.

'The necessary marketing support for the new products, in effect, saw the group incurring higher sales and distribution expenses for the second quarter of the year, impacting the group's bottom line,' it said in a statement today.

In addition, the group was also affected by foreign exchange losses in second quarter of the year due to the strengthening of the ringgit.

Group Managing Director, Datuk Pang Tee Chew said in line with the strong demand, the company added a new production line for 'Mister Potato Rice Crisps,' and intends to invest RM25 million in advertising and promotions for the second half of 2010, higher than the RM16 million it spend in the first of the year.

'With the increased advertising and promotions, we hope to penetrate both the local and export markets more significantly,' he added. -- Bernama

Mamee ... Jun10

It will invest RM20 million to plant oil palms in Central Kalimantan at the end of the year. It is part of the company's strategies to diversify its revenue base and produce enough palm oil for its own use in the future.

Mamee achieved a revenue of RM411.6 million last year, up 3.7 per cent from 2008. After-tax profit surged 88.1 per cent to RM44.4 million.

Mamee has added two more products to its range: Mister Rice Crisps and Indonesia Instant Fried Noodle. The former is free of monosodium glutamate. The latter, made in Indonesia through contract manufacturing, is aimed at meeting growing demand, especially from the younger generation and Indonesians.

Mamee reported higher profit & higher sales

Results Update

Mamee has just announced its results for QE31/3/2010. Its net profit increased by 16.2% q-o-q or 13.6% y-o-y to RM12.0 million while turnover increased by 11.9% q-o-q or 26.0% y-o-y to RM115 million. The improved performance was attributable to higher sales, both domestically & overseas, and the return to profitability for its Chinese subsidiary.

Table 1: Mamee's last 8 quarterly results

Chart 1: Mamee's 16 quarterly results

Valuation

Mamee (closed at RM2.78 yesterday) is now trading at a PER of 9.3 times (based on the last 4 quarters' EPS of 30 sen. At this multiple, Mamee is considered quite attractive.

Technical Outlook

Mamee has been in an uptrend since November 2009. Its uptrend line accelerated twice, from SS to S1-S1 and then S2-S2. In the past 2 weeks of market selloff, Mamee broke below its accelerated uptrend line, S2-S2. It may consolidate further & may test the 20-week SMA line at RM2.76 or the next accelerated uptrend line, S1-S1 support at RM2.70.

Chart 2: Mamee's week chart (on Log scale) as at May 26, 2010 (Source: Tradesignum)

Conclusion

Based on good financial performance & attractive valuation, Mamee could be a good stock for long-term investment. However, after a strong rally- punctuated by a breakdown of its immediate accelerated uptrend line- and the current uncertainty in the overall market, one should be more circumspect about buying into Mamee in a substantial manner for now.

Mamee surpassed its recent high of RM2.30

Mamee has just broken above its recent high of RM2.30. From Chart 1, we can see that Mamee surpassed its horizontal resistance of RM2.20-21 & then the recent high of RM2.30. As at 3.45pm, Mamee is trading at RM2.45.

Chart 1: Mamee's daily chart as at Jan 18, 2010 (Source: Tradesignum)

From the monthly chart (Chart 2) below, we can see Mamee broke above its long-term downtrend line (RR) at RM1.45 in August last year. With the breakout above the recent high of RM2.30, Mamee's next horizontal resistance will be at RM3.00. I feel that Mamee's uptrend from October 2008 until today fits quite nicely into 5 waves according to the Elliot Waves theory. The stock could be in the fifth wave, i.e. the final impulse wave before the uptrend reaches its peak (unless there are wave extensions). The fifth wave is a very tricky wave & often doesn't unravel perfectly. While it may overshoot, it may also drop suddenly & sharply.

If you have strong nerve, you can consider Mamee, especially if it pulls back to RM2.30. For more on Mamee, go to my earlier post. Mamee had completed a 4-for-5 Bonus Issue in November last year.

Mamee- a very attractive consumer stock

Mamee- a very attractive consumer stock: Background

Mamee-Double Decker (M) Bhd ('Mamee') is principally involved in the manufacture and marketing of fast moving consumer products, such as food, dairy products and soft drinks.

Recent Financial Results

Its recently announced results for 2Q2009 ended 30/6/2009 shows that Mamee can maintain its top-line & bottom-line in the difficult economic environment. Its net profit increased by 1.4% q-o-q or 185% y-o-y to RM10.7 million while turnover increased by 12.5% q-o-q or 4.3% y-o-y to RM103 million.

Table 1: Mamee's 8 quarterly results

Over 21 quarters, Mamee's turnover grew from RM69 million in QE30/6/2004 to RM103 million in the recently completed QE30/6/2009- a compounded annual growth rate of 9%. At the same time, its net profit grew from RM2.6 million to RM10.7 million- a compounded annual growth rate of 33%.

Chart 1: Mamee's 21 quarterly results

Valuation

Mamee (closed at RM2.50 yesterday) is now trading at a trailing PE of 5.4 times (based on last 4 quarters' EPS of 46 sen) or at Price to Book of only 1 time. At these multiples, Mamee is deemed very attractive. With its high growth rate, I believe Mamee could easily trade at a PE of 10 times; thus giving the stock a target of at least RM4.60.

Technical Outlook

Mamee is in a short-term uptrend, with support at RM2.30. Its immediate resistance is at RM2.60 and thereafter at RM2.75. See the daily & weekly charts below.
